Second Thoughts, Chicken Skewers and Smoke Detectors

Today marks the beginning of the second half of NaBloPoMo. I admit it. I'm over it. While I certainly appreciate the forced discipline of making a daily habit of writing, I've recently felt that even more than forcing a habit, it's forcing me to put insufficiently significant or relevant words out into the world. Perhaps NaBloPoMo is more appropriate for a general topic blog than for something as specific as this. Maybe B was right to say that it's impossible to be true to the spirit of Thursday Night Bites while posting every day. I haven't completely decided yet, but I committed to the whole month and that's what I intend to complete.

Moving on...
We ate dinner at home tonight for the first time in about a week. Sadly, a week wasn't enough time to make me excited about cooking. I'm not exactly sure how much time that would take, actually. In any case, I had a double burner grill delivered with our groceries last week, so at least I was looking forward to trying it out. I decided to make chicken skewers since, other than quesadillas and potato skins, any meat on a stick is B's favorite meal and I had yet to attempt making them myself. I marinated the cut chicken for just a couple of hours while I soaked the skewers in water. I won't even try to accurately quantify what was in the marinade. Precise recipes aren't really my strength. It was a big bowl of Tamari sauce, Worcestshire sauce, spiced balsamic vinegar, honey, Tabasco sauce, minced garlic and a little olive oil.

Surprisingly, they came out pretty good (even though they were a little burned).
We kept it simple and just had them over rice.

Of course, it's not a homecooked meal at our house without at least one smoke detector incident. No, that's not commentary on my cooking skills, though it could be from the picture I usually paint. Ever since we moved into our condo a year ago, we've had issues with our smoke detectors. We've had one of them replaced since it wouldn't turn off the first time it went off about a week after we moved in. The fact is, there are just too many smoke detectors too close together in the kitchen area. Washington state law says that smoke detectors are only required in sleeping areas, but for some reason, we have two practically in our kitchen about five feet apart. We've disabled one (though it still wails fiercely when the other one goes off). Despite an absence of smoke or any significant heat, all the smoke detectors go off nearly every time I use the stove for anything more signficant than soup. It's annoying, to say the least. We've tried to find a solution, but for now, we just open the balcony door and window, turn the fan on high and B is prepared to shut them off once the screeching starts. I know there's a better way. We just haven't figured out what it is yet.

  1. Glad you've made it so far publishing a post everyday. I agree that trying to produce quality content on such a regular basis is difficult while also trying to "be true to the spirit of Thursday Night Bites".

Whether you decide to stick with NaBloPoMo or not I hope this exercise has bolstered your confidence in your writing ability and brought along some new readers.
